Important information about Cipro XR

How does Cipro XR work?

The active ingredient in Cipro XR is ciprofloxacin or ciprofloxacin hydrochloride and an antibiotic known as a fluoroquinolone (or "quinolone") is ciprofloxacin functions by inhibiting specific enzymes (proteins) that bacteria need to develop and repair their DNA to survive. The antibiotic kills bacteria by obstructing this mechanism of action.

How do you use Cipro XR?

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Cipro XR. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Cipro XR:

  • As directed, take Cipro XR. Even if you feel better, make sure you complete your course of treatment. Early drug discontinuation may cause your infection to recur and make treatment more challenging.
  • Cipro XR can be taken with or without food. Try taking it with meals if it's making your stomach uncomfortable. However, make sure to stay away from calcium-containing beverages and dairy products (such as milk and yogurt). The quantity of Cipro XR that is absorbed into your body can be decreased by calcium. At least two hours before or six hours after consuming dairy or calcium-containing drinks, take Cipro XR.
  • When taking Cipro XR, be sure to drink enough water to be well hydrated. If you get diarrhea while taking Cipro XR, doing this helps avoid dehydration.
  • There are two dosages of the Cipro XR suspension: 250 mg/5 mL and 500 mg/5 mL. To accurately estimate your dosage, be careful to know which suspension strength you have. If you are unsure about how much medication to measure out for your dose, ask your chemist.
  • Before using, give the bottle a good shake. Be cautious to measure out your dosage solely with a pharmacy-provided oral syringe- or medicine dosing cup. Household spoons are inaccurate and could lead to you taking the incorrect amount, so avoid using them.

What are the side effects of Cipro XR?

The most common side effects of Cipro XR seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:

  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Skin rash.
  • Abnormal liver blood test results.
  • Lightheadedness.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Cipro XR. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

  • Achilles pain, joint or muscle pain muscle weakness, or edema.
  • Seizures or epilepsy.
  • Changes in behavior or ideas
  • Nerve injury manifests as burning, tingling, numbness, "pins-and-needles" feeling, and changes in temperature or mild touch sensations.
  • Significant blood vessel damage manifests as shortness of breath, arm or leg pain, or abrupt, intense chest, back, or stomach pain.
  • Infectious (related to C. difficile) diarrhea: fever, frequent bowel movements, and foul-smelling diarrhea
  • Chest pounding, chest pain, dyspnoea, and dizziness or fainting are signs of an irregular heart rhythm (QT prolongation).
  • Reduced frequency of urination and edema in the hands, ankles, or feet are signs of kidney issues.
  • Liver disease includes bloating in the stomach, yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, and black urine.
  • Serious skin and allergic reactions include blisters, hives, skin peeling or reddening, lip or tongue swelling, and trouble breathing.

These are not all of the possible side effects of Cipro XR. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.

What are the warnings or precautions for Cipro XR?

Before starting Cipro XR, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including if you have:

  • Serious adverse effects with Cipro XR might include low blood sugar, nerve damage, tendon issues, and significant mental or behavioral changes.
  • If you have a headache, irritation, numbness, tingling, burning pain, disorientation, anxiety, paranoia, memory or concentration issues, suicidal thoughts, or sudden pain or movement issues in any of your joints, stop taking this medication and contact your doctor right once.
  • Nerves are the fibers that carry sensations from your body to the brain. Damage to these nerves, called peripheral neuropathy, can happen in people who are taking ciprofloxacin.
  • In rare instances, ciprofloxacin may harm your aorta, which could result in fatal bleeding. If you get severe, ongoing back, stomach, or chest pain, get emergency medical attention.
  • If you have a muscle condition, you might not be able to use Cipro XR. If you have a history of myasthenia gravis, let your doctor know.
  • If you have a ciprofloxacin allergy, take tizanidine concurrently, or are allergic to any of the other fluoroquinolones (levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, or ofloxacin), you should not use Cipro XR.
  • A tendon, which is the fiber that joins bones to muscles in the body, may expand or rip as a result of ciprofloxacin, particularly the Achilles tendon in the heel. This may occur during treatment or months after stopping Cipro. Children, the elderly, steroid medication users, and organ transplant recipients may be especially susceptible to tendon problems.
  • Cipro can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight so be sure to avoid sun lamps or sunburn.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever experienced any of the following to ensure Cipro is safe for you:
  • Arthritis or issues with your bones, joints, or tendons (particularly in kids).
  • Low blood sugar, diabetes.
  • Nerve issues.
  • An aneurysm or issues with blood flow.
  • Cardiac issues, such as a heart attack.
  • Myasthenia gravis, muscular weakening, or tendinitis.

-Renal or liver problems.

  • A brain tumor, head injury, or seizure.
  • Kidney, heart, or lung transplant.
  • Difficulty swallowing medication.
  • Either you or a family member has long QT syndrome.
  • Hypokalaemia, or low potassium levels in the blood.

Are there any contraindications with Cipro XR?

Certain medical disorders or circumstances are known as contraindications, and they raise safety concerns about a medication's use. It is not safe for you to take Ciprofloxacin (Cipro), therefore let your doctor know if you have any of the following conditions or if any of the following apply to you.

  • Severe quinolone antibiotic allergy.
  • Combining ciprofloxacin (Cipro) with tizanidine (Zanaflex)

How long does it take Cipro XR to work?

Depending on the kind of infection you have and its severity, Cipro XR's half-life can vary from person to person. People who take antibiotics usually start feeling better one to three days after beginning treatment. However, it's crucial to complete the entire course of Cipro XR even if you feel better. Stopping Cipro XR too soon could cause your infection to recur and make treatment more difficult.

What interacts with Cipro XR?

When Cipro XR is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:

  • When taken with other medications, Cipro's risk factors may be significantly reduced. Take your dose of any of the following medications two hours before or six hours after taking the other medication.
  • Sucralfate, an ulcer medication, or antacids (such as Maalox, Milk of Magnesia, Mylanta, Pepcid Complete, Rolaids, Tums, and others) that include calcium, magnesium, or aluminum.
  • Chewable pills or powdered didanosine (Videx) such as multivitamins.
  • Calcium, iron, magnesium, or zinc-containing vitamin or mineral supplements.

Inform your physician of all additional medications you use, particularly:

  • Probenecid, ropinirole, sildenafil, phenytoin, methotrexate, cyclosporine, clozapine, or theophylline.
  • A blood thinner, such as Jantoven, Coumadin, or Warfarin.
  • Diabetic, heart medicine, or "water pill"
  • Oral diabetic medication.
  • Goods that have caffeine in them.
  • Medication for mental disease or sadness. Such as a tricyclic antidepressant or duloxetine, even if it is not used for depression.
  • Steroids (prednisone, for example).
  • Aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), celecoxib, diclofenac, indomethacin, meloxicam, and other NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications).
