Important information about Ciloxan Eye Drops
Ciloxan contains ciprofloxacin, which is a quinolone antibiotic. It works by killing bacteria that cause eye infections, including bacterial conjunctivitis and infections involving the cornea.
Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Ciloxan eye drops. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Ciloxan eye drops:
- Wash your hands before using the eye drops.
- Shake the bottle well.
- Tilt your head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid to form a pocket.
- Place one drop into the affected eye(s) by pushing or tapping the bottom of the bottle - do not squeeze the bottle. Close your eye gently and press your finger to the inner corner of your eye for two minutes, to help prevent the medication from draining into your tear duct.
- Do not let the dropper tip touch the eye, fingers, or other surfaces.
- If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using Ciloxan eye drops. Contact lenses should generally not be worn during active eye infections.
- If you use any other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between uses.
- If you use both eye drops and eye ointment, apply the eye drops first and wait before using the ointment.
- If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and use the next dose at the regular time. Do not use extra drops.
Some mild or common side effects of Ciloxan eye drops include:
- Eye discomfort.
- Bad taste.
- Blurred vision.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Ciloxan eye drops. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:
- Serious allergic reaction - symptoms may include hives, swelling of the face, skin rash, breathing problems, or trouble swallowing.
- Severe eye problems - symptoms may include worsening eye pain, severe redness, swelling, vision changes, or signs of corneal damage.
- Pain or swelling of your tendons.
These are not all of the possible side effects of Ciloxan eye drops. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.
Before starting Ciloxan eye drops, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including:
- Allergy to foods, preservatives, or dyes.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Elderly and taking corticosteroids.
- Children under 12 months of age.
- Allergy to ciprofloxacin, other quinolone antibiotics, or any inactive ingredients, including benzalkonium chloride.
- Wearing contact lenses.
Some improvement in symptoms may occur within a few days, but continue treatment for the full prescribed duration to properly treat the infection.
Because Ciloxan works locally and is not significantly absorbed, drug interactions are unlikely. However, inform your health care professional about all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and supplements you are taking. The following are interactions seen with systemic quinolones:
- Warfarin may have increased levels and put you at an increased risk of bleeding when combined with ciprofloxacin.
- Combination with cyclosporine may affect renal function.
- Theophylline may have increased levels when combined with ciprofloxacin.
It is available as an ophthalmic solution containing 0.3% ciprofloxacin hydrochloride.
Store at room temperature and keep out of the reach of children and pets.
It is manufactured by Novartis.
Yes, it is available from many manufacturers of generic drugs.
Barring any of the above serious side effects or under the advice of your physician, do not stop taking Ciloxan suddenly.
As it has only been studied in animals, Ciloxan should only be used in pregnancy if the potential benefit outweighs the risk to the fetus.
Talk to your doctor if you are already pregnant or if you have any plans to become pregnant. They will know or recommend what is best for you.
Small amounts of ciprofloxacin may pass into breast milk.
Talk to your doctor if you are already breastfeeding or if you have any plans to breastfeed. They will know or recommend what is best for you.
