What is Fazaclo ODT?

What is Fazaclo ODT?

Fazaclo is a prescription medication that contains clozapine. It belongs to a group of medicines called atypical antipsychotics. Fazaclo is used to treat schizophrenia, including treatment-resistant schizophrenia, and to reduce the risk of suicidal behavior in people with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.

Fazaclo is available as orally disintegrating tablets. Clozapine is generally used when other antipsychotic medications have not worked well enough. Because it can cause serious side effects, careful monitoring with regular blood tests is required.

Common side effects may include drowsiness, weight gain, constipation, and drooling.

Important information about Fazaclo ODT

The active ingredient in Fazaclo is clozapine.

Clozapine works by affecting certain chemicals in the brain, including dopamine and serotonin. These brain chemicals play a role in mood, thinking, and behavior. By changing how these chemicals work, clozapine helps improve symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking. It may also reduce the risk of suicidal behavior in certain patients.

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Fazaclo. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Fazaclo:

  • Take Fazaclo exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
  • Fazaclo orally disintegrating tablets should be placed on the tongue and allowed to dissolve.
  • Do not chew or swallow the tablet whole unless directed.
  • Treatment usually begins with a lower dose and is slowly increased through titration.
  • Your healthcare provider will adjust the dose in small increments until the target dose is reached.
  • Do not stop taking Fazaclo suddenly without medical advice.
  • Regular blood tests are required to monitor your absolute neutrophil count (ANC).

If you miss a dose, contact your healthcare provider for instructions, especially if you miss more than 2 days of treatment.

Some mild or common side effects of Fazaclo include:

  • Drowsiness.
  • Drooling.
  • Dizziness.
  • Nausea.
  • Vomiting.
  • Trouble sleeping.
  • Headache.
  • Increased blood sugar.
  • Increased cholesterol.
  • Weight gain.
  • Constipation.
  • Dry mouth.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Fazaclo. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

  • Severe neutropenia, which may cause fever or sore throat due to low white blood cell levels.
  • Myocarditis or cardiomyopathy, which may cause chest pain or shortness of breath.
  • Severe constipation leading to bowel problems.
  • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome, which may cause high fever, muscle stiffness, and confusion.
  • Tardive dyskinesia, which may cause uncontrolled muscle movements, such as facial grimacing, lip-smacking, and blinking.
  • A blood clot in the lungs, with symptoms such as sudden chest pain, trouble breathing, bloody cough, and an increased heart rate.
  • Seizures.
  • Severe orthostatic hypotension or syncope.
  • Severe allergic reaction, including swelling or trouble breathing.

These are not all of the possible side effects of Fazaclo. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.

  • Seizure disorders.
  • Glaucoma.
  • Diabetes or high blood sugar.

Boxed Warning

Clozapine carries boxed warnings for severe neutropenia, orthostatic hypotension with syncope, seizures, myocarditis and cardiomyopathy, and increased mortality in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis.

Fazaclo is available only through a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program because of the risk of severe neutropenia. Baseline and ongoing blood tests are required to monitor white blood cells and ANC levels.

Fazaclo is contraindicated in patients with a history of serious hypersensitivity to clozapine. It should not be used in patients with uncontrolled epilepsy or severe bone marrow suppression.

Some improvement in symptoms may be noticed within a few weeks. However, full benefits may take several weeks to months. Dose adjustments are made gradually to reduce the risk of side effects.

When Fazaclo is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:

  • Carbamazepine, which may lower clozapine levels and increase the risk of low white blood cells.
  • Phenytoin, which may reduce clozapine levels.
  • Fluvoxamine, which may increase clozapine levels.
  • Sertraline, which may affect clozapine metabolism.
  • Other antipsychotics, such as olanzapine, may increase side effects.
  • Medications that lower blood pressure are associated with the risk of orthostatic hypotension.
  • Laxatives or magnesium-containing products, which may affect bowel function.

Fazaclo is available as orally disintegrating tablets in multiple strengths.

Treatment typically starts at a low daily dose, such as 12.5 mg once or twice daily. The dose is gradually increased in increments to reach a target dose based on response and tolerance. The maximum dose should not exceed 900 mg per day.

It should be stored at room temperature, away from the reach of children or pets.

Fazaclo (clozapine), an orally disintegrating tablet, was originally developed by Alamo Pharmaceuticals, LLC and Cima Labs Inc

Yes, clozapine is available as a generic medication. Clozapine is also marketed under other brand names such as Clozaril.

Do not stop taking Fazaclo without medical advice. Stopping suddenly may worsen symptoms or cause withdrawal effects. Your healthcare provider may lower the dose gradually if treatment needs to be discontinued.

Talk to your doctor if you are already pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Your healthcare provider will weigh the benefits and risks before continuing treatment.

Talk to your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Clozapine passes into breast milk, and your healthcare provider will discuss the safest option for you and your baby.
