What is a generic medication?
Generic medications are significantly discounted copies of brand name medication that have the same active ingredients, intended use, dosage, side effects, effects, and route of administration as the original brand name medication. In other words, generic medications have the same pharmacological effects as their brand-name counterparts. Over half of all prescribed medications are for generic medications.

Lopressor Overview
Metoprolol is used with or without other medications to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Lopressor is also used to treat chest pain (angina) and to improve survival after a heart attack. Metoprolol belongs to a class of drugs known as beta blockers. It works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals in your body, such as epinephrine, on the heart and blood vessels. This effect lowers the heart rate, blood pressure, and strain on the heart.

Lopressor Warnings
Do not stop taking Lopressor without consulting your doctor. Some conditions may become worse when you suddenly stop Lopressor. Some people who have suddenly stopped taking similar drugs have had chest pain, heart attack, and irregular heartbeat. If your doctor decides you should no longer use Lopressor, your doctor may direct you to gradually decrease your dose over 1 to 2 weeks. When gradually stopping Lopressor, it is recommended that you temporarily limit physical activity to decrease strain on the heart. Get medical help right away if you develop chest pain/tightness/pressure, chest pain spreading to the jaw/neck/arm, unusual sweating, trouble breathing, or fast/irregular heartbeat.

How to Use Lopressor
Take Lopressor by mouth with or right after a meal as directed by your doctor, usually 1 to 3 times a day. The Dosage of Lopressor is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may direct you to start Lopressor at a low dose and gradually increase your dose. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully. Use Lopressor regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) each day. Do not suddenly stop taking Lopressor without consulting your doctor. Your condition may become worse when the drug is suddenly stopped. For the treatment of high blood pressure, it may take several weeks before you get the full benefit of Lopressor. Keep taking Lopressor even if you feel well. Most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick. To prevent chest pain, a second heart attack, or migraine headaches, it is very important to take Lopressor regularly as prescribed. Lopressor should not be used to treat chest pain or migraines when they occur. Use other medications to relieve sudden attacks as directed by your doctor (for example, nitroglycerin tablets placed under the tongue for chest pain, triptan drugs such as sumatriptan for migraines). Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens (for example, if your routine blood pressure readings remain high or increase, if your chest pain or migraines occur more often).

Lopressor Precautions
Before taking metoprolol, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other beta-blockers (such as atenolol, propranolol); or if you have any other allergies. Lopressor may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details. Before using Lopressor, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, certain types of heart rhythm problems (such as a slow heartbeat, sick sinus syndrome, second- or third-degree atrioventricular block), breathing problems (such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema), liver disease, heart failure, serious allergic reactions, including those needing treatment with epinephrine, blood circulation problems (such as Raynaud's disease, peripheral vascular disease), mental/mood disorders (such as depression), a certain muscle disease (myasthenia gravis). Lopressor may make you dizzy or drowsy. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you more dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages. Talk to your doctor if you are using marijuana (cannabis). Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products). If you have diabetes, Lopressor may mask the fast/pounding heartbeat you would usually feel when your blood sugar falls too low (hypoglycemia). Other symptoms of low blood sugar, such as dizziness and sweating, are unaffected by Lopressor. Lopressor may also make it harder to control your blood sugar. Check your blood sugar regularly as directed and share the results with your doctor. Tell your doctor right away if you have symptoms of high blood sugar such as increased thirst/urination. Your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medication, exercise program, or diet. Children may be at greater risk for low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially if they are vomiting or not eating regularly. To help prevent low blood sugar, feed children on a regular schedule. If your child cannot eat regularly, is vomiting, or has symptoms of low blood sugar (such as sweating, seizures), stop Lopressor and tell the doctor right away. During pregnancy, Lopressor should be used only when clearly needed. It may harm an unborn baby. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Lopressor passes into breast milk but is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Lopressor Side Effects
What are Lopressor side effects?
Side effects are physical, mental or emotional symptoms which occur in addition to or outside of the desired effect of a therapeutic treatment such as an over-the-counter or prescribed drug or medication. Side effects from Lopressor may occur at the beginning or at the end of treatment and may also depend on the length of time an individual remains on the treatment. Side effects, also known as adverse effects, are generally more likely to occur when starting treatment. Individuals may also experience side effects from Lopressor as a result of an interaction with other medications.
Side Effects of Lopressor
The side effects of Lopressor may vary in number and intensity for many different reasons. Factors such as age, weight, gender and ethnicity may influence the side effects of Lopressor. Also, an individual’s state of general physical health and seriousness of the disease or illness as well as an increase or decrease in dosage may lead to side effects. Further, side effects from Lopressor may also occur as a result of an interaction with certain herbal supplements, foods or drinks.
Prescription drug side effects can be serious and may cause patients to stop the treatment. However, when side effects from the use of a prescription drug, such as Lopressor, do occur a patient should consult their physician. A physician may prescribe an additional treatment in order to control the symptoms or an adjustment in the dosage may be made. In addition, changes to diet, exercise or other lifestyle activities may help to lessen the side effects of Lopressor.
By understanding side effects and the factors which may influence the occurrence of side effects patients are empowered to take an active role in their care.
