What is a generic medication?

Generic medications are significantly discounted copies of brand name medication that have the same active ingredients, intended use, dosage, side effects, effects, and route of administration as the original brand name medication. In other words, generic medications have the same pharmacological effects as their brand-name counterparts. Over half of all prescribed medications are for generic medications.

Timoptic Drug Information

  • Timoptic Overview

Timolol is used with or without other medications to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Timoptic is also used after a heart attack to help prevent another heart attack from occurring. Timoptic belongs to a class of drugs known as beta blockers. It works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals in your body such as epinephrine on the heart and blood vessels. This effect lowers the heart rate, blood pressure, and strain on the heart. Timoptic is also used to prevent migraine headaches.

  • Timoptic Warnings

Do not stop taking Timoptic without consulting your doctor. Some conditions may become worse when you suddenly stop Timoptic. Some people who have suddenly stopped taking similar drugs have had chest pain, heart attack, and irregular heartbeat. If your doctor decides you should no longer use Timoptic, he or she may direct you to gradually decrease your dose over 1 to 2 weeks. When gradually stopping Timoptic, it is recommended that you temporarily limit physical activity to decrease strain on the heart. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop chest pain/tightness/pressure, chest pain spreading to the jaw/neck/arm, unusual sweating, trouble breathing, or fast/irregular heartbeat.

  • How to Use Timoptic

Take Timoptic by mouth with or without food, usually once or twice a day or as directed by your doctor. Dosage of Timoptic is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. For the treatment of high blood pressure, do not take more than 60 milligrams a day. For the prevention of migraines, do not take more than 30 milligrams a day. Use Timoptic regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) each day. For the treatment of high blood pressure, it may take several weeks before you get the full benefit of Timoptic. It is important to continue taking Timoptic even if you feel well. Most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick. To prevent chest pain or migraine headaches, it is very important to take Timoptic regularly as prescribed. Timoptic should not be used to treat chest pain or migraines when they occur. Use other medications to relieve sudden attacks as directed by your doctor (for example, nitroglycerin tablets placed under the tongue for chest pain, "triptan" drugs such as sumatriptan for migraines). Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens (for example, if your routine blood pressure readings remain high or increase, if your chest pain or migraines occur more often).

  • Timoptic Precautions

Before taking timolol, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. Timoptic may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details. Timoptic should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, certain types of heart rhythm problems (such as a slow heartbeat, second- or third-degree atrioventricular block), severe heart failure, breathing problems (such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema). Before using Timoptic, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, treated stable heart failure, kidney disease, liver disease, overactive thyroid disease (hyperthyroidism), serious allergic reactions including those needing treatment with epinephrine, blood circulation problems (such as Raynaud's disease, peripheral vascular disease), mental/mood disorders (such as depression), a certain muscle disease (myasthenia gravis). If you have diabetes, Timoptic may mask the fast/pounding heartbeat you would usually feel when your blood sugar falls too low (hypoglycemia). Other symptoms of low blood sugar, such as dizziness and sweating, are unaffected by Timoptic. Timoptic may also make it harder to control your blood sugar. Check your blood sugar regularly as directed and share the results with your doctor. Tell your doctor right away if you have symptoms of high blood sugar such as increased thirst/urination. Your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medication, exercise program, or diet. Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking Timoptic. Timoptic may make you dizzy. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you more dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages. Talk to your doctor if you are using marijuana (cannabis). Kidney function declines as you grow older. Timoptic is removed by the kidneys. Therefore, older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of Timoptic, including dizziness and tiredness. During pregnancy, Timoptic should be used only when clearly needed. It may harm an unborn baby. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Timoptic passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor before breast-feeding.

  • Timoptic Misdose

If you miss a dose of Timoptic, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose. Take your next dose at the regular time. Do not double the dose to catch up.

  • Timoptic Interactions

See also Precautions section. Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor or pharmacist first. Before using Timoptic, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, fingolimod, drugs affecting liver enzymes that remove timolol from your body (such as quinidine, SSRI antidepressants such as fluoxetine). Some products have ingredients that could raise your heart rate or blood pressure. Tell your pharmacist what products you are using, and ask how to use them safely (especially cough-and-cold products, diet aids, or NSAIDs such as ibuprofen/naproxen). This document does not contain all possible interactions. Therefore, before using Timoptic, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all the products you use. Keep a list of all your medications with you, and share the list with your doctor and pharmacist.

  • Timoptic Side Effects

    What are Timoptic side effects?

Side effects are physical, mental or emotional symptoms which occur in addition to or outside of the desired effect of a therapeutic treatment such as an over-the-counter or prescribed drug or medication. Side effects from Timoptic may occur at the beginning or at the end of treatment and may also depend on the length of time an individual remains on the treatment. Side effects, also known as adverse effects, are generally more likely to occur when starting treatment. Individuals may also experience side effects from Timoptic as a result of an interaction with other medications.

    Side Effects of Timoptic

The side effects of Timoptic may vary in number and intensity for many different reasons. Factors such as age, weight, gender and ethnicity may influence the side effects of Timoptic. Also, an individual’s state of general physical health and seriousness of the disease or illness as well as an increase or decrease in dosage may lead to side effects. Further, side effects from Timoptic may also occur as a result of an interaction with certain herbal supplements, foods or drinks.

Prescription drug side effects can be serious and may cause patients to stop the treatment. However, when side effects from the use of a prescription drug, such as Timoptic, do occur a patient should consult their physician. A physician may prescribe an additional treatment in order to control the symptoms or an adjustment in the dosage may be made. In addition, changes to diet, exercise or other lifestyle activities may help to lessen the side effects of Timoptic.
