Diflucan

The active ingredient in Fluconazole is fluconazole itself. Fluconazole (Diflucan) is an azole antifungal medicine that prevents the fungus from producing a protective covering. This prevents the fungus from growing or surviving.

However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Fluconazole:

• Fluconazole oral tablets and liquid suspension are consumed by mouth. Fluconazole injection is administered as an infusion into a vein by a healthcare provider.
• Even if your symptoms resolve fast, continue to take fluconazole for the recommended period of time.
• Skipping doses increases your risk of developing a drug-resistant infection.
• Fluconazole does not treat viral infections like the flu or the common cold.

Some mild or common side effects of Fluconazole seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:

• Headaches.
• Nausea and vomiting.
• Stomach pain.
• Dizziness.
• Urinary tract infections.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Fluconazole. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

• Liver damage symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, stomach pain, yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice), dark urine, and pale stool.
• Serious allergic reactions and skin responses include hives, skin rash, blisters, swelling of the lips or tongue, difficulty breathing, reddening, scaling, and itching.

Before starting Fluconazole, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including:

• Liver problems or liver disease.
• Kidney disease.
• Low levels of potassium in the blood.
• Heart problems, such as irregular heart rhythm.

Taking some drugs that can lengthen the QT interval (the time when your heart resets after each pump).

Fluconazole normally begins to work within one day of taking it, but the time it takes to feel completely relieved varies depending on the type and severity of infection. Symptoms of vaginal yeast infections usually improve within one to three days, but it might take up to a week to fully recover. More serious fungal infections (such as those affecting the blood, lungs, or other organs) often require many days to weeks of treatment to fully resolve.

When Fluconazole is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:

• Voriconazole.
• Amiodarone.
• Atorvastatin.
• Erythromycin.
• Itraconazole.
• Ketoconazole.
• Pimozide.
• Quinidine.
• Warfarin.
• Glyburide.
• Losartan
• Theophylline.
• Cyclosporine.

Your fluconazole dose and duration of treatment will be determined by your healthcare professional depending on a variety of criteria, including the kind of illness and its severity.

Adults:

The normal dose for vaginal yeast infection is 150 mg of a Fluconazole tablet, which can be taken orally in one dose.

For mouth, throat, or esophageal candidiasis, the normal dose is 200 mg orally on the first day, followed by 100 mg once daily. Treatment usually lasts at least two weeks.

The appropriate dose for blood, lung, or other whole-body infections has yet to be found. Doses of up to 400 mg/day have been administered. For further information, consult your health-care provider.

UTI and peritonitis: The normal dose is 50 mg to 200 mg by mouth once daily.

The normal dose for fungal infection prevention is 400 mg taken orally once daily.

Cryptococcal meningitis: The normal dose is 400 mg orally on the first day, followed by 200 mg once daily. Most persons with this illness will be on fluconazole (Diflucan) for several months.

Your child's paediatrician will decide the appropriate dose based on their weight and age.

For oral, throat, or esophageal infections, the normal dose is 6 mg/kg of body weight by mouth on the first day, followed by 3 mg/kg once per day. Treatment usually lasts at least two weeks.

Whole-body infection: The normal dose is 25 mg/kg by mouth on the first day, followed by 9 mg/kg to 12 mg/kg orally once daily.

The normal dose for cryptococcal meningitis is 12 mg/kg by mouth on the first day, followed by 6 mg/kg once daily. Most youngsters with this disease will be on fluconazole (Diflucan) for several months.

Store at room temperature and keep out of reach of children.

There are several generic name versions of this medication available.

You should not stop taking Fluconazole without consulting your doctor. Stopping too soon may cause the fungal infection to recur or worsen. If you have adverse effects or your symptoms resolve quickly, your doctor will choose whether to change your dose, shorten your course, or safely terminate therapy.

This medication may harm an unborn baby. Women who may get pregnant should use effective birth control while taking fluconazole and for at least one week following their last dosage. If you become pregnant, tell your doctor straight away.

Fluconazole can be passed through breast milk to the newborn. Consult your doctor about the best ways to feed your infant while taking fluconazole.
