Important information about Jublia

The active ingredient in Jublia is efinaconazole. Efinaconazole is an azole medication with antifungal properties. Oftentimes, the nail fungus is due to fungi called trichophyton mentagrophytes and trichophyton rubrum, both of which Jublia has good activity against. It is indicated for adults or pediatric patients 6 years of age or older with toenail fungus.

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Jublia. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Jublia:

  • Use Jublia exactly as prescribed. Do not exceed the recommended application amount or duration of use.
  • Jublia comes as a topical solution that is applied directly to the affected toenail(s) daily using the integrated flow-through brush applicator. Ensure toenail(s) are clean and dry before use. Wait 10 minutes after washing, showering, or bathing before use.
  • It is unknown if nail products such as nail polish can affect the effectiveness of Jublia. Consult your healthcare provider before use.
  • Do not use Jublia in patients less than 6 years of age.
  • Jublia is for external use only. Do not ingest or use it on the eyes or vagina.

The most common side effects of Jublia seen in clinical trials include:

  • Ingrown toenails
  • Application site dermatitis (redness, itching, or swelling)
  • Pain at the application site
  • Burning or stinging sensation
  • Blisters

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Jublia. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

  • Consult your healthcare provider if any of the above side effects are intolerable or do not improve with continued use of Jublia.
  • Signs of an allergic reaction such as trouble breathing, hives, or swelling of the face, tongue, eyes, or throat

These are not all of the possible side effects of Jublia. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.

Before starting Jublia, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including if you have:

  • Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed

There are no contraindications to using Jublia.

It will take several months of consistent use to see results with Jublia. Treatment is typically for 48 weeks.

When Jublia is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions.

Jublia is available in a topical solution in the following strength:

  • Efinaconazole 10%

It is available in 4 mL or 8 mL bottles.

Jublia should be stored at room temperature. Jublia is flammable so it must be kept away from heat or an open flame. Do not freeze Jublia. Keep the bottle tightly closed, in an upright position, and out of reach of children.

Jublia is manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Bausch Health.

There is a generic version of the brand name Jublia available. Toenail fungus may also be treated by another antifungal medication called ciclopirox. There are generics available of this medication as well and unlike Jublia, it is available in many different dosage forms other than a topical solution.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before starting, stopping, or changing medications while taking Jublia.

It is unknown if Jublia can cause harm to your unborn child. Talk to your doctor if you are already pregnant or if you have any plans to become pregnant. They will know or recommend what is best for you.

It is unknown if Jublia passes into the breast milk. Talk to your doctor if you are already breastfeeding or if you have any plans to breastfeed. They will know or recommend what is best for you.
