The active ingredient in Brolene is propamidine isetionate, an antibacterial that reduces the growth of bacteria.

However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Brolene:

1. Any other eye drops or ointments should be applied at least ten minutes before this one.

2. It is recommended to rinse the affected eye(s) before use with saline solution or warm water that has previously been boiled.

3. Wash your hands before and after each use. Shake the bottle well.

4. Do not allow the dropper tip to touch your eye, fingers, or any other surface to avoid contamination.

5. To apply the drops, tilt your head up and pull down on your lower eyelid of the affected eye while looking up. Then squeeze the bottle to release one drop of the solution into your eye.

6. Following administration, close your eyes gently and hold pressure on your tear duct (inner corner of your eye, by your nose) for one minute. Then repeat for the other eye if needed. You can use a clean tissue to wipe any residue on your face.

7. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before administering, then you can re-insert them 15 minutes after.

8. If you use more than one eye drop, wait at least 5 minutes between administrations.

9. You should discard the bottle 4 weeks after first opening it, and do not use it past the expiry date.

Some mild and common possible side effects of Propamidine seen in clinical trials include:

  • Burning sensation in the eyes.
  • Eye pain.
  • Dry eyes.

Hypersensitivity or allergy to propamidine isethionate, the preservative benzalkonium chloride, or the inactive ingredients ammonium chloride, sodium chloride, or sodium hydroxide.

You should notice a benefit with Brolene within 2 days, and complete resolution within 7 days. If you do not, stop using it and let your doctor know.
