Important information about Valoid

The active ingredient in Valoid is cyclizine hydrochloride, a piperazine derivative. The leaflet states that Valoid belongs to a group of medicines called antihistamines and works by blocking the effects of histamine and acetylcholine in the body, which can make you feel sick or vomit.

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Valoid. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Valoid:

  • Adults and children over 12 years of age usually take one tablet up to three times a day.
  • Children 6 to 12 years of age usually take half a tablet up to three times a day.
  • The tablet can be split into equal doses along the score line.
  • Take the tablets with a little water to make swallowing easier.
  • If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember and then continue as before.
  • Valoid Tablets are not recommended for children under 6 years of age.
  • This medication can make you drowsy, so don't plan to drive or operate any heavy machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Alcohol should be avoided when taking Valoid because the anti-vomiting effects of cyclizine may increase the toxicity of alcohol.

Some mild or common side effects of Valoid seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:

  • Drowsiness.
  • Dry mouth, nose, or throat.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Constipation.
  • Acid reflux.
  • Stomach pain.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Muscle twitches, spasms, or tremors.
  • Increased sun sensitivity (photosensitivity).

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Valoid. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

  • For motion sickness, the tablet should be taken 1-2 hours before departure.
  • Allergic reaction, with signs and symptoms such as itching, skin rash, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, wheezing, or trouble breathing.
  • Seizures.
  • Hallucinations.
  • Liver problems, with signs and symptoms such as yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes.
  • Breathing problems (apnoea), with signs and symptoms such as reduced breathing rate, breathing difficulty, or wheezing.
  • Agranulocytosis, with signs and symptoms such as unusual tiredness, unexpected bruising or bleeding, or more infections such as colds or sore throats than usual.

Disclaimer: These are not all of the possible side effects of Valoid. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.

Before starting Valoid, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including:

  • Glaucoma.
  • Urinary retention.
  • Stomach cramps, abdominal pain, or constipation.
  • Liver problems.
  • Phaeochromocytoma (tumour of the medulla of the adrenal glands).
  • High blood pressure.
  • Epilepsy.
  • Enlarged prostate gland.
  • Heart failure.
  • Porphyria (disorder causing increased sun sensitivity).
  • Muscle or nerve problems.

  • Allergy to cyclizine hydrochloride or any other ingredient in the tablets.
  • Current alcohol use or recent drinking of alcohol.
  • Children under 6 years of age.
  • Because the formulation contains lactose as an excipient, those with sugar intolerance disorders should not take it.

Valoid usually starts working within 30 minutes, and the effects last about 4-6 hours.

When Valoid is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:

  • Additive effects with alcohol and other CNS depressants such as hypnotics, anesthetics, antipsychotics, and barbiturates.
  • Pethidine may make you more drowsy than usual if combined with cyclizine.
  • The heart effects of opioid painkillers may be counteracted by cyclizine.
  • Cyclizine may enhance the anticholinergic effects of other medications with similar effects, such as atropine and some antidepressants (tricyclic antidepressants and MAOIs).
  • Valoid may mask the signs of hearing damage from aminoglycoside antibiotics such as tobramycin.

Valoid is usually taken as needed for symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness, but your doctor may recommend you take it regularly. Barring any of the above serious side effects or under the advice of your physician, do not stop taking Valoid suddenly.
