  • Mekinist Overview

Trametinib is used to treat various cancers (such as skin, thyroid, lung, solid tumors). It belongs to a class of drugs known as kinase inhibitors. Trametinib works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells.

  • How to Use Mekinist

Read the Patient Information Leaflet if available from your pharmacist before you start taking trametinib and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Take Mekinist by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually once daily at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. The Dosage of Mekinist is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Children's dose is also based on weight. Take Mekinist regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day. Do not increase your dose or use Mekinist more often or for longer than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of side effects will increase. Since Mekinist can be absorbed through the skin and lungs and may harm an unborn baby, women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant should not handle Mekinist or breathe the dust from the tablets.

  • Mekinist Precautions

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products). Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of Mekinist, especially swelling of the arms/legs and loss of appetite. Since Mekinist can be absorbed through the skin and lungs and may harm an unborn baby, women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant should not handle Mekinist or breathe the dust from the tablets. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. You should not become pregnant while using trametinib. Trametinib may harm an unborn baby. Your doctor should order a pregnancy test before you start Mekinist. Women using Mekinist should ask about reliable forms of birth control during treatment and for 4 months after the last dose. Men (including those who have had a vasectomy) using Mekinist who have female partners who are pregnant or of childbearing age should use condoms during sex while on treatment and for at least 4 months after the last dose. If you or your partner becomes pregnant, talk to your doctor right away about the risks and benefits of Mekinist. It is unknown if Mekinist passes into breast milk. • Mekinist Side Effects

    What are Mekinist side effects?

Side effects are physical, mental or emotional symptoms which occur in addition to or outside of the desired effect of a therapeutic treatment such as an over-the-counter or prescribed drug or medication. Side effects, also known as adverse effects, are generally more likely to occur when starting treatment. Individuals may also experience side effects from Mekinist as a result of an interaction with other medications.

    Side Effects of Mekinist

Also, an individual’s state of general physical health and seriousness of the disease or illness as well as an increase or decrease in dosage may lead to side effects. Further, side effects from Mekinist may also occur as a result of an interaction with certain herbal supplements, foods or drinks.

Prescription drug side effects can be serious and may cause patients to stop the treatment. A physician may prescribe an additional treatment in order to control the symptoms or an adjustment in the dosage may be made. In addition, changes to diet, exercise or other lifestyle activities may help to lessen the side effects of Mekinist.
