What is a generic medication?

Generic medications are significantly discounted copies of brand name medication that have the same active ingredients, intended use, dosage, side effects, effects, and route of administration as the original brand name medication. In other words, generic medications have the same pharmacological effects as their brand-name counterparts. Over half of all prescribed medications are for generic medications.

  • Temodar Overview

Temodar is used to treat certain types of brain cancer. Temozolomide belongs to a class of drugs known as alkylating agents. It works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells.

  • How to Use Temodar

Read the Patient Information Leaflet if available from your pharmacist before you start taking temozolomide and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Take Temodar by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually once a day on a treatment schedule. Swallow the capsules whole with a full glass of water (8 ounces or 240 milliliters). Do not crush, chew, or open the capsules. If you vomit after taking your dose, do not take any more medication. Wait and take your next dose at the regular time. To reduce nausea and vomiting, take temozolomide on an empty stomach or at bedtime. For the best effect, take Temodar at the same time every day in relation to a meal (for example, 1 hour before or 3 hours after a meal). The dosage and treatment schedule are based on your medical condition, height, weight, and response to treatment. Carefully follow your doctor's directions for taking Temodar. To help you remember, mark your calendar to keep track of when to take the next dose. Your doctor may also prescribe other medications (such as antibiotics) to help prevent infection or side effects. Follow your doctor's directions for taking all your medications. Do not increase your dose or use Temodar more often or for longer than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of serious side effects will increase. If the capsules are accidentally opened or damaged, avoid inhaling the medication or getting it on your skin. If contact occurs, flush the area with water. Since Temodar can be absorbed through the skin and lungs and may harm an unborn baby, women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant should not handle Temodar or breathe the dust from the capsules.

  • Temodar Precautions

Before taking temozolomide, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to dacarbazine; or if you have any other allergies. Temodar may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details. Before using Temodar, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, kidney problems, liver problems, bleeding/blood problems. Temozolomide can make you more likely to get infections or may worsen any current infections. Avoid contact with people who have infections that may spread to others (such as chickenpox, measles, flu). Consult your doctor if you have been exposed to an infection or for more details. Tell your health care professional that you are using temozolomide before having any immunizations/vaccinations. Avoid contact with people who have recently received live vaccines (such as flu vaccine inhaled through the nose). To lower the chance of getting cut, bruised, or injured, use caution with sharp objects like razors and nail cutters, and avoid activities such as contact sports. Temodar may make you dizzy. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you more dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages. Talk to your doctor if you are using marijuana (cannabis). Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (such as prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products). Women and older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of Temodar, especially increased risk of infection and easy bruising/bleeding. Men should not donate sperm while using temozolomide and for 3 months after stopping Temodar. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. You should not become pregnant while using temozolomide. Temozolomide may harm an unborn baby. Your doctor should order a pregnancy test before you start Temodar. Women using Temodar should ask about reliable forms of birth control during treatment and for 6 months after stopping treatment. Men using Temodar who have a partner that is pregnant or who can become pregnant should use a condom for birth control during treatment and for 3 months after stopping treatment. If you or your partner becomes pregnant, talk to your doctor right away about the risks and benefits of Temodar. It is unknown if Temodar passes into breast milk. Because of the possible risk to the infant, breast-feeding is not recommended while using Temodar and for at least 1 week after stopping treatment. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

  • Temodar Misdose

It is important to take each dose of Temodar as scheduled. If you miss a dose of Temodar, ask your doctor or pharmacist right away for a new dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

  • Temodar Interactions

Drug interactions may change how your medications work or increase your risk for serious side effects. This document does not contain all possible drug interactions. Keep a list of all the products you use (such as prescription/nonprescription drugs and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicines without your doctor's approval.

  • Temodar Side Effects

    What are Temodar side effects?

Side effects are physical, mental or emotional symptoms which occur in addition to or outside of the desired effect of a therapeutic treatment such as an over-the-counter or prescribed drug or medication. Side effects from Temodar may occur at the beginning or at the end of treatment and may also depend on the length of time an individual remains on the treatment. Side effects, also known as adverse effects, are generally more likely to occur when starting treatment. Individuals may also experience side effects from Temodar as a result of an interaction with other medications.

    Side Effects of Temodar

The side effects of Temodar may vary in number and intensity for many different reasons. Factors such as age, weight, gender and ethnicity may influence the side effects of Temodar. Also, an individual’s state of general physical health and seriousness of the disease or illness as well as an increase or decrease in dosage may lead to side effects. Further, side effects from Temodar may also occur as a result of an interaction with certain herbal supplements, foods or drinks.

Prescription drug side effects can be serious and may cause patients to stop the treatment. However, when side effects from the use of a prescription drug, such as Temodar, do occur a patient should consult their physician. A physician may prescribe an additional treatment in order to control the symptoms or an adjustment in the dosage may be made. In addition, changes to diet, exercise or other lifestyle activities may help to lessen the side effects of Temodar.

By understanding side effects and the factors which may influence the occurrence of side effects patients are empowered to take an active role in their care. Patients who have specific questions about the side effects of Temodar, or any other medication, should contact their physician.
