Important information about Salsalate
Salsalate belongs to the salicylate family of NSAIDs and works by reducing inflammation in the body. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting enzymes that produce prostaglandins.
Prostaglandins are substances in the body that contribute to inflammation, swelling, and pain. By blocking cyclooxygenase enzymes responsible for prostaglandin production, salsalate helps reduce inflammation and discomfort.
Because of this anti-inflammatory action, salsalate is often used in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, where inflammation in the joints causes pain and stiffness.
Unlike some other NSAIDs, salsalate may have a slightly different effect on platelets and stomach irritation compared with certain traditional NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or naproxen.
Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Salsalate. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Salsalate:
- Take Salsalate exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
- The medication is taken orally in tablet form.
- It may be taken with food or milk to reduce stomach upset.
- Swallow the tablets with a full glass of water.
- Take the medication at evenly spaced intervals to maintain consistent levels in the body.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and only take the next dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

Boxed Warning
Cardiovascular risks
- NSAIDs can increase the risk of serious heart and blood vessel events such as heart attack (MI) and stroke, which may be fatal.
- The longer they are used, the higher the risk may become.
- People who already have heart disease or cardiovascular risk factors are at greater risk.
- NSAIDs must not be used for pain after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, because they increase the chance of heart attack and stroke.
Gastrointestinal (GI) risks
- NSAIDs can cause serious stomach and intestinal problems, including bleeding, ulcers, and perforation, which can be fatal.
- These problems can occur at any time during use, even without warning symptoms.
- Older adults are at higher risk of these serious GI complications.
Salsalate should not be used in patients with:
- Hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to salicylates.
- Severe allergic reactions to NSAIDs.
- Recent coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.
Salsalate may begin reducing pain and inflammation within several days of treatment. However, the full anti-inflammatory effects may take longer, depending on the severity of the condition.
Patients with arthritis may need to take the medication regularly to maintain symptom control.
When Salsalate is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:
- Warfarin or other blood thinners, which may increase the risk of bleeding.
- Methotrexate, which may increase the risk of toxicity when combined with salicylates.
- Lithium, which may increase lithium levels in the body.
- Other NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen or naproxen, may increase the risk of stomach bleeding.
- Prednisone or other corticosteroids, which may increase the risk of gastrointestinal irritation.
Salsalate is available as oral tablets.
