Naprosyn

(Naproxen)

Naprosyn, also known as naproxen, is a brand-name prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, tendonitis, bursitis, gout, menstrual cramps, and other inflammatory conditions. It can be taken by both adults and children. Naprosyn is taken orally as a pill or liquid suspension, usually two to three times a day, and acts by blocking particular proteins that cause pain and inflammation.

The slower-acting Naprosyn delayed-release tablets are only used to treat long-term ailments such as ankylosing spondylitis and arthritis. It does not work fast enough to relieve severe, acute pain.

Important information about Naprosyn

How does Naprosyn work?

The active ingredient in Naprosyn is naproxen which is an NSAID, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. It functions by preventing your body's cyclooxygenase, or COX, proteins from causing pain, swelling, and inflammation.

How do you use Naprosyn?

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Naprosyn. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Naprosyn:

  • Naprosyn tablets and liquid suspension are taken by mouth, usually 2 to 3 times per day. It is recommended that you take this medication with food or milk as it can upset your stomach.
  • Just before measuring a dose of the suspension, shake it well. Use the included dosing syringe, a specialized dose-measuring spoon, or a medicine cup to measure liquid medication.
  • Your dosage requirements may change if you switch naproxen brands, strengths, or forms. If you have any doubts concerning the type of Naprosyn you are taking, ask your healthcare provider.
  • Inform your doctor if your child's weight changes while taking this medication. Children's Naprosyn dosages are determined by their weight, thus any alterations could have an impact on your child's dosage.

What are the warnings or precautions for Naprosyn?

Before starting Naprosyn, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including if you have:

  • If you have a naproxen allergy or have experienced a severe allergic reaction or asthma attack after taking aspirin or an NSAID, you should avoid using Naprosyn.
  • Using Naprosyn for an extended period of time, taking large doses, or having heart disease can all raise your chance of dying from a heart attack or stroke. While using this medication, even those without heart disease or risk factors may get a heart attack or stroke.
  • Naprosyn should not be taken right before or right after coronary artery bypass grafting.
  • Additionally, naproxen may result in potentially deadly intestinal or stomach hemorrhage. When taking this medication, these side effects can happen suddenly, especially in elderly persons.
  • Consult a physician or pharmacist about the safety of using this medication if you have:
  • Diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or smoking.
  • A history of blood clots, heart attacks, or strokes.
  • A history of bleeding or stomach ulcers.
  • Asthma.

What doses of Naprosyn are available?

Naprosyn's various formulations and strengths cannot be used interchangeably. If your doctor is transferring you from one type of naproxen to another, they will probably need to change your dosage.

Naprosyn 125 mg/5 mL suspension and Naprosyn immediate-release tablet:

The usual dosage for RA, OA, and AS is 250–500 mg taken orally twice a day. 1,500 mg is the maximum dosage per day.

For children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis, the liquid suspension is recommended. Only youngsters who weigh more than 50 kg should take the tablet: Based on your child's body weight, the paediatrician will calculate the dosage. Usually, 5 mg/kg is taken orally twice a day.

The usual dosage for pain, menstrual cramps, tendinitis, and bursitis is 500 mg taken orally once, then 250 mg every 6 to 8 hours as needed. 1,250 mg daily is the maximum dosage.

Gout: 750 mg taken orally at the onset of an attack, followed by 250 mg every 8 hours until the symptoms subside, is the usual dosage.

Naproxen delayed-release tablet (EC-Naprosyn):

RA, OA, and AS: 375 mg or 500 mg taken orally twice daily is the usual dosage. 1,500 mg is the maximum dosage per day.

For children weighing 50 kg or more, the pediatrician will calculate the dosage for juvenile idiopathic arthritis based on your child's body weight. Usually, 5 mg/kg is taken orally twice a day.

You might not be following a dose plan because Naprosyn is occasionally used only when necessary. If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.
