Motrin

The ibuprofen in Motrin products targets the chemical pathways to inhibit the production of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are chemicals that produce inflammation or sensations of pain.

Motrin comes in a variety of forms including hard tablets, chewable tablets, liquid suspension, liquid gel capsules, topical gels or creams, as well as a spray. The oral products can be taken with milk, snacks, or meals to avoid an upset stomach. Inform your health care professional or pharmacist if you are allergic to Ibuprofen. Follow all directions and recommendations given by your health care professional or pharmacist and read all sources provided, including prescribing information, FDA-Approved Product Labelling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before use. Ask for further clarification if needed. However, the general guidelines for using Motrin are to take 1 tablet, capsule, or suspension dosage every 4-6 hours. If symptoms do not improve, 2 tablets or capsules may be used. However, no more than 6 tablets or capsules should be taken in 24 hours.

Common side effects of Motrin include:

More serious side effects of Motrin include:

-Allergic or skin reactions

-Headache

-Dizziness

-Bloated

-Stomach ulcer or stomach bleeding

-Chest pain or Shortness of breath

-Kidney failure

-Blood present in vomit

-Black-colored tarry stool

Talk to your healthcare provider if you have allergic reactions to the active ingredient or inactive ingredients in Motrin, or if alternatives such as Advil or Naproxen should be used instead. Motrin or other ibuprofen products should not be taken if you have experienced the following:

-Hypersensitivity to other NSAIDs

-Stomach ulcers

-Chronic high blood pressure

-Liver disease

-Heart disease or heart failure

-Stroke

-Lupus

-Kidney problems or kidney disease

-Crohn’s disease

-Use anticoagulants (blood thinners)

Moreover, avoid taking Motrin or other NSAIDs if you recently had heart surgery such as a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG). In cardiac patients, NSAIDs such as Motrin can cause a risk of heart attack.

In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention or contact a Poison Control Center, even if signs or symptoms are unnoticeable. (1-800-222-1222)

Avoid taking Motrin if you or a family member have hypersensitivity to Ibuprofen, experienced asthma, urticaria, or allergic or anaphylactic reactions to aspirin or other NSAIDs. Inform your healthcare professional of your medical history to determine whether you should take Motrin products.

Motrin is absorbed rather quickly and begins taking effect within 30 minutes. The full effect of Motrin may be felt within 1-2 hours and may last between 6-8 hours.

When Motrin is taken with other medications, it can interfere with the efficacy and possibly cause or worsen side effects. Consult with your healthcare provider if any medications or supplements you are currently taking may interact adversely with Motrin.

Motrin may interact with the following:

-Antidepressants

-Beta-blockers

-Diuretics

The dosage administered to infants and children depends on their age and weight. Ask your healthcare provider or child’s pediatrician if unsure, however, the typical dosages for infants and children are as follows:

Infants’ Pediatric Liquid Motrin Medicine Drops

• 1.25mL for ages 6-11 months or 12-17lbs
• 1.875mL for 12-23 months or 18-23lbs
• Liquid should be dispensed slowly and towards the inner cheek.

Children’s Motrin Liquid Oral Suspension

• Ask your healthcare provider or child’s pediatrician for guidance if the child is under 2 years of age or 24 lbs.
• 5mL for ages 2-3 years or 24-35 lbs.
• 7.5mL for ages 4-5 years or 36-47 lbs.
• 10mL for ages 6-8 years or 48-59 lbs.
• 12.5mL for ages 9-10 years or 60-71 lbs.
• 15mL for age 11 years or 72-95 lbs.

Children’s Motrin Chewable Tablets

• Ask your healthcare provider or child’s pediatrician for guidance if the child is under 2 years of age or 24 lbs.
• 1 tablet for ages 2-3 years or 24-35 lbs.
• 1.5 tablets for ages 4-5 years or 36-47 lbs.
• 2 tablets for ages 6-8 years or 48-59 lbs.
• 2.5 tablets for ages 9-10 years or 60-71 lbs.
• 3 tablets for age 11 years 72-95 lbs.

The dosage administered to adults ages 12 years and above depends on the condition being treated and the severity of the symptoms. Ask your healthcare provider if unsure, however, the typical dosages for adults are as follows:

• Motrin IB Adult’s 200mg Ibuprofen Tablets or Liquid Gels
• 1-2 tablets every 4-6 hours. Do not exceed 6 tablets in 24 hours.

Motrin IB Adult’s 200mg Ibuprofen and 38mg Sleep Aid

• 2 tablets before bed. Do not exceed 2 tablets in 24 hours.

Motrin Adult’s Topical Gel or Spray

• 4 times per day up to 21 days on no more than 2 areas of your body.

Motrin IB Adult’s 125mg Ibuprofen and 250mg Acetaminophen Dual Action Tylenol Tablet

• 2 tablets every 8 hours. Do not exceed 6 tablets in 24 hours.

Motrin IB Adult’s 200mg Ibuprofen Liquid Gel Capsules specifically for Migraines

• 2 capsules with water. Do not exceed 2 capsules in 24 hours.

Elements such as heat, moisture, and even light can damage your medications. Motrin should be stored at room temperature (20-25 degrees Celsius/68-77 degrees Fahrenheit), preferably in the kitchen cabinet rather than the bathroom cabinet, as light and humidity can affect the efficacy of Motrin. Once opened, Motrin can remain at room temperature and does not need to be stored in the refrigerator. Keep out of the reach of children.

The Motrin brand name is manufactured by Kenvue. Kenvue was the Consumer Healthcare division of Johnson & Johnson before becoming an independent proprietor of Motrin in 2021.

Ibuprofen is considered the generic version of Motrin.

Your healthcare provider may recommend you reduce the dosage you are currently taking before stopping completely. Some may even provide a temporary alternative to help you transition off ibuprofen safely. Withdrawal symptoms may occur such as:

• Headaches
• Fatigue
• Inflammation
• Irritability

If you are deprescribing from experiencing adverse effects, however, you may need to reduce your dosage faster or cease usage immediately.

Ibuprofen products such as Motrin should be avoided in the second half of pregnancy (after week 20) as it may affect the baby’s kidneys, heart, and lung development. It may be safer to take Motrin in the first half of pregnancy, however, ibuprofen poses no risks in all stages of pregnancy. Your healthcare provider may exercise discretion in dosage or recommend an alternative such as acetaminophen.

Ibuprofen products such as Motrin can be taken or used topically while breastfeeding. Only small traces will be passed along to the baby and is unlikely to cause side effects in the baby. However, should you notice any change in feeding or sleeping routine, talk to your healthcare provider, midwife, or pharmacist immediately.
