Voltaren Gel

However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Voltaren as a gel:

• Wash your hands: Before and after applying Voltaren gel, wash your hands thoroughly. If you are treating your hands do not wash them after applying the gel.
• Clean and dry the affected area: Ensure the skin area where you will apply the gel is clean and dry.
• Measure the correct dose: Use the dosing card provided with the medication to measure the appropriate amount of gel. Typically, a specific length of gel is recommended (e.g., 2 grams or 4 grams).
• Apply the pain relief gel: Gently apply the measured amount of gel to the affected area. Do not apply to open wounds, infections, or irritated skin.
• Massage gently: Rub the gel into the skin gently until it is evenly distributed. Do not cover the treated area with bandages or heating pads unless directed by your doctor.
• Avoid certain areas: Do not apply the gel on your face, eyes, or mucous membranes. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
• Wait before washing: Allow the gel to dry before covering the treated area with clothing. Avoid washing the treated area for at least 1 hour after application.

The most common side effects of Voltaren include:

Boxed Warning

• Voltaren holds a boxed warning.
• There is a cardiovascular and gastrointestinal (GI) risk.
• NSAIDs can increase the risk of blood clots, myocardial infarction (heart attack), and stroke. All of which can be fatal.
• Voltaren Gel is contraindicated in the treatment of peri-operative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.
• There is a risk of serious GI damage with NSAIDS such as Voltaren, including ulceration, bleeding, and perforations (holes) of the stomach or intestines, which can be fatal. Elderly patients are at a higher risk of serious GI events.

• Do not use in individuals with known hypersensitivity to diclofenac, aspirin, or other NSAIDs.
• Avoid use in patients with a history of asthma, hives, or other allergic reactions triggered by aspirin or NSAIDs.
• Contraindicated during the perioperative period of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.

Voltaren (diclofenac) typically starts reducing pain and inflammation within one to two hours after application or ingestion, depending on the form. Topical Voltaren Gel may take several days of consistent use to provide full relief for conditions like arthritis. For best results, use Voltaren as directed and give it time to build up its effect for chronic pain conditions.

When Voltaren is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:

• Other pain relievers/NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, advil, aspirin, ketoprofen or naproxen.
• Certain heart and/or blood pressure medications, including a diuretic or “water pill.”

There are multiple treatment options for Voltaren, some of which are available over-the-counter (OTC).

• Topical gel: When using Voltaren arthritis pain gel, apply a thin layer to the affected area and gently massage until absorbed. The recommended dose is usually 2 to 4 grams per affected area, up to four times daily. Wash your hands after application unless you're treating your hands.
• This comes as a 1% gel.

Keep Voltaren at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.

Voltaren (diclofenac) is manufactured by Novartis Consumer Healthcare and marketed by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in many regions.

Currently, there is a lower-cost generic available for the brand name Voltaren.

To stop taking Voltaren, you can generally discontinue use without needing to taper off, as it does not cause dependence. If you are using it for chronic pain, consult your doctor to discuss alternative treatments or pain management options. Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions when stopping any medication to ensure proper care and minimize any potential symptoms.

Talk to your doctor if you are already pregnant or if you have any plans to become pregnant. They will know or recommend what is best for you. One study showed that babies born to mothers who took NSAIDs such as Voltaren early in their pregnancy had a higher risk of birth defects, compared to mothers who took Tylenol. Also, the FDA specifically says to avoid NSAIDs if you are at least 20 weeks pregnant because they can cause kidney and heart problems to your unborn baby.

Talk to your doctor if you are already breastfeeding or if you have any plans to breastfeed. They will know or recommend what is best for you. Your healthcare provider may recommend alternative pain relief methods or medications that are known to be safer during breastfeeding.
