What is Maxidex?

Maxidex is a brand-name eye medication that contains dexamethasone. It belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids. Maxidex is used to treat inflammation of the eye caused by allergic conjunctivitis, iritis, injury, surgery, or certain infections of the eye.

Inflammation can cause redness, swelling, eye pain, and blurred vision. By reducing swelling and irritation, Maxidex helps protect the cornea and other delicate eye structures.

Important information about Maxidex

The active ingredient in Maxidex is dexamethasone.

Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid. Its mechanism of action involves blocking the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation. When used, dexamethasone eye drops reduce swelling, redness, itching, and irritation inside the eye.

Corticosteroids also help prevent further damage to the cornea and other tissues when inflammation is severe. However, they do not treat bacterial infections directly and may require combination treatment if infection is present.

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Maxidex. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Maxidex:

  • Wash your hands before and after using the eye drops.
  • Shake well before each use, as Maxidex is an ophthalmic suspension.
  • Tilt your head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
  • Hold the dropper above the eye and place the prescribed number of drops into the affected eye.
  • Do not allow the dropper tip to touch the eye, fingers, or any surface.
  • Close your eyes gently for 1 to 2 minutes after applying the drops.
  • If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using the medication. Soft contact lenses may absorb preservatives such as benzalkonium chloride.
  • Wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting contact lenses.
  • Use the medicine for the full time prescribed, even if symptoms improve.

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not use extra drops to make up for a missed dose.

Some mild or common side effects of Maxidex include:

  • Temporary blurred vision after applying the drops.
  • Eye irritation or burning.
  • Dry eye.
  • Eye discomfort.
  • Foreign body sensation.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Maxidex. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

  • Increased pressure inside the eye, which may lead to glaucoma.
  • Cataracts with long-term use.
  • Worsening or new infections of the eye, including fungal infections or herpes simplex keratitis.
  • Severe eye pain or vision changes.
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives or swelling.
  • Thinning of the cornea or perforation in rare cases.

These are not all of the possible side effects of Maxidex. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.

Before starting Maxidex, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including:

  • Glaucoma or a history of high eye pressure.
  • Cataracts.
  • Herpes simplex infection of the eye.
  • Fungal infections of the eye.
  • Recent eye surgery.
  • A history of corneal erosion or thinning.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Long-term use of dexamethasone ophthalmic may increase the risk of glaucoma or cataracts. Your healthcare provider may monitor eye pressure if treatment continues for more than a few weeks.

Maxidex is contraindicated in patients with certain viral infections of the eye, including vaccinia and varicella, and in untreated bacterial or fungal ocular infections. It should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to dexamethasone or any of the components in the formulation. Some inactive ingredients include sodium chloride, dibasic sodium phosphate, polysorbate 80, edetate disodium, citric acid, and/or sodium hydroxide.

Many patients notice improvement in redness and swelling within a few days. The full effect depends on the severity of the inflammation and the underlying condition. Continue using the medication as directed, even if symptoms improve quickly.

Because Maxidex is used in the eye, systemic drug interactions are less common. However, tell your healthcare provider about all prescription drugs, supplements, and other eye products you use.

Using other corticosteroids at the same time may increase the risk of side effects. If you use other eye drops, wait several minutes between each medication to prevent washout.

Maxidex is available as a 0.1% dexamethasone ophthalmic suspension.

Typical dosing may include 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye every 4 to 6 hours. In more severe cases, your healthcare provider may recommend more frequent dosing at the start of treatment. The exact dose and frequency depend on the condition being treated.

It should be stored at room temperature, away from the reach of children or pets.

Maxidex is primarily manufactured and distributed by Novartis.

Yes, dexamethasone ophthalmic is available as a generic medication.

Do not stop using Maxidex suddenly if you have been using it for an extended period. Your healthcare provider may advise you to gradually reduce the number of drops per day to prevent rebound inflammation.

Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Your healthcare provider will weigh the potential benefits and risks before recommending treatment.

It is not known how much dexamethasone ophthalmic passes into breast milk. Talk to your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding. They will help determine the safest option for you and your baby.
