  • Qvar Overview

Beclomethasone is used to prevent and control symptoms (wheezing and shortness of breath) caused by asthma. Qvar belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids. It works directly in the lungs to make breathing easier by reducing the irritation and swelling of the airways. Qvar must be used regularly to prevent breathing problems (attacks of wheezing/shortness of breath). It does not work right away and should not be used to relieve an asthma attack. If an attack occurs, use your quick-relief inhaler as prescribed.

  • How to Use Qvar

Read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist before you start using Qvar and each time you get a refill. Follow the illustrated directions for the proper use of Qvar. If you have any questions, consult your doctor, pharmacist, or respiratory therapist. Follow the instructions for priming the inhaler if you are using a canister for the first time or if you have not used it for 10 days or more. There is no need to shake the inhaler. Avoid getting the medication in your eyes when priming or using the inhaler. Inhale Qvar by mouth, usually 2 times a day or as directed by your doctor. The Dosage of Qvar is based on your age, medical condition and response to treatment. If your prescribed dose is 2 puffs, wait at least one minute between them. If you are using other inhalers at the same time, wait at least 1 minute between the use of each medication, and use Qvar (the corticosteroid) last. To prevent dry mouth, hoarseness, and oral yeast infections from developing, gargle, rinse your mouth with water and spit out after each use. Do not swallow the rinse water. Keep track of the number of inhalations used. Discard the canister after using the labeled number of inhalations on the package, even if it feels as though there is medication left in the canister. Follow the instructions for cleaning the inhaler. Do not wash the inhaler or put any part of it in water. Use Qvar regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same time(s) each day. Do not increase your dose or use Qvar more often or for longer than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of side effects will increase. Do not stop taking Qvar without consulting your doctor. Some conditions may become worse when the drug is suddenly stopped. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased. Learn which of your inhalers you should use every day (controller drugs) and which you should use if your breathing suddenly worsens (quick-relief drugs). Ask your doctor ahead of time what you should do if you have new or worsening cough or shortness of breath, wheezing, increased sputum, worsening peak flow meter readings, waking up at night with trouble breathing, if you use your quick-relief inhaler more often (more than 2 days a week), or if your quick-relief inhaler does not seem to be working well. Learn when you can treat sudden breathing problems by yourself and when you must get medical help right away. If you are regularly taking a different corticosteroid by mouth (such as prednisone), you should not stop taking it unless directed by your doctor. Some conditions (such as asthma, allergies) may become worse when the drug is suddenly stopped. If you suddenly stop taking the drug, you may also have withdrawal symptoms (such as weakness, weight loss, nausea, muscle pain, headache, tiredness, dizziness). To help prevent withdrawal, your doctor may slowly lower the dose of your old medication after you begin using beclomethasone. Tell your doctor or pharmacist right away if you have withdrawal. See also Precautions section. You may begin to feel Qvar working within 24 hours, but it may take 3 weeks or longer before the full benefit of Qvar takes effect. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.

  • Qvar Precautions

Before using beclomethasone, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. Qvar may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details. Before using Qvar, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, eye disease (such as cataracts, glaucoma), liver disease, thyroid problems, diabetes, stomach/intestinal problems (such as diverticulitis, ulcer), bone loss (osteoporosis), current/past infections (such as tuberculosis, positive tuberculosis test, herpes, fungal), bleeding problems, mental/mood conditions (such as psychosis, anxiety, depression). If you have switched from a corticosteroid taken by mouth (such as prednisone tablets) to this inhaler within the past 12 months, or if you have been using Qvar in higher-than-usual doses for a long time, it may be more difficult for your body to respond to physical stress. Before having surgery or emergency treatment, or if you get a serious illness/injury, tell your doctor or dentist that you are using Qvar or have used a corticosteroid taken by mouth within the past 12 months. Tell your doctor right away if you develop unusual/extreme tiredness or weight loss. Carry a warning card or medical ID bracelet that says you use (or have used) corticosteroid medications. Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products). Qvar may mask signs of infection. It can make you more likely to get infections or may worsen any current infections. Avoid contact with people who have infections that may spread to others (such as chickenpox, measles, flu). Consult your doctor if you have been exposed to an infection or for more details. Tell your health care professional that you are using beclomethasone before having any immunizations/vaccinations. Avoid contact with people who have recently received live vaccines (such as flu vaccine inhaled through the nose). Qvar may temporarily slow down a child's growth if used for a long time. However, poorly controlled asthma can also slow down growth. See the doctor regularly so your child's height can be checked. During pregnancy, Qvar should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is unknown if Qvar passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

  • Qvar Side Effects

    What are Qvar side effects?

Side effects are physical, mental or emotional symptoms which occur in addition to or outside of the desired effect of a therapeutic treatment such as an over-the-counter or prescribed drug or medication. Side effects from Qvar may occur at the beginning or at the end of treatment and may also depend on the length of time an individual remains on the treatment. Side effects, also known as adverse effects, are generally more likely to occur when starting treatment. Individuals may also experience side effects from Qvar as a result of an interaction with other medications.

    Side Effects of Qvar

The side effects of Qvar may vary in number and intensity for many different reasons. Factors such as age, weight, gender and ethnicity may influence the side effects of Qvar. Also, an individual’s state of general physical health and seriousness of the disease or illness as well as an increase or decrease in dosage may lead to side effects. Further, side effects from Qvar may also occur as a result of an interaction with certain herbal supplements, foods or drinks.

Prescription drug side effects can be serious and may cause patients to stop the treatment. However, when side effects from the use of a prescription drug, such as Qvar, do occur a patient should consult their physician. A physician may prescribe an additional treatment in order to control the symptoms or an adjustment in the dosage may be made. In addition, changes to diet, exercise or other lifestyle activities may help to lessen the side effects of Qvar.

By understanding side effects and the factors which may influence the occurrence of side effects patients are empowered to take an active role in their care. Patients who have specific questions about the side effects of Qvar, or any other medication, should contact their physician.
