Nasonex Nasal Spray

The active ingredient in Nasonex is mometasone Furoate, a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation to relieve allergy symptoms and other nasal symptoms of rhinosinusitis and nasal polyps.

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Nasonex. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Nasonex:

-Remove the blue cap from the nozzle end of the device.

-To activate the device, with your forefinger and middle finger on either side of the nozzle, and your thumb on the bottom of the bottle, press your thumb up towards the nozzle.

-Before using your Nasonex spray for the first time, prime the pump by actuating the pump in the air, away from you, 10 times, until it creates a uniform spray. If the bottle has not been used in more than 14 days, you should prime the device again.

-Shake the Nasonex bottle well before each use.

-Before using Nasonex, blow your nose if you can.

-Insert the nozzle into one nostril while closing the other nostril with your finger.

-Actuate the spray while breathing in through your nose.

-Repeat in the other nostril, or for a second spray, as instructed by your doctor.

Below are recommended dosing schedules for Nasonex:

-For the treatment of seasonal allergies in children: one spray in each nostril once daily.

-For the treatment of rhinosinusitis in adults: 2 sprays in each nostril twice daily (up to four sprays twice daily).

-For the treatment of nasal polyps in adults: 2 sprays in each nostril twice daily. Your doctor may choose to reduce your dose to two sprays once daily if your symptoms are controlled.

The most common side effects of Nasonex seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:

-Headaches

-Nose bleeds

-A sore throat

-Nasal irritation or burning

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Nasonex. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

-Signs or symptoms of a severe bacterial infection (fever, persistent one-sided tooth or face pain, swelling around the eye, or worsening of symptoms after initial improvement)

-Changes in vision

Before starting Nasonex, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including if you:

-Have been using systemic corticosteroids: You may need to taper off these medications before switching to Nasonex to avoid withdrawal.

-Have had recent surgery on your nose: Corticosteroids should not be used until complete healing has occurred.

-Have a bacterial sinus infection: Nasonex should not be used for the treatment of sinusitis without an oral antibiotic.

-Are immunocompromised: Glucocorticoids may increase the risk of infections such as chicken pox, measles, and herpes.

-Have glaucoma, cataracts, or other eye conditions.

Do not use Nasonex if you have had severe allergic reactions to mometasone or any inactive ingredient in the formulation, including benzalkonium chloride, citric acid, carboxymethylcellulose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, glycerol, Polysorbate 80, and sodium citrate dihydrate.

It should be used with caution in people who have tuberculosis or untreated fungal, bacterial, or viral infections.

Unlike nasal decongestants, the effects of intranasal mometasone are not immediate and may take 48 hours.

Although the risk of interaction is low due to its nasal formulation, when Nasonex is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:

-Medications that inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme, including ritonavir, ketoconazole, clarithromycin, cobicistat, etc.

Nasonex is available in a formulation that delivers 100mg of mometasone furoate monohydrate solution (50 mcg of mometasone furoate) with each spray.
