Important information about Pred Forte
The active ingredient in Pred Forte is prednisolone acetate, which is a corticosteroid. This artificial steroid is similar to the hormone cortisol, which is produced naturally by your body. Pred Forte functions by reducing specific molecules that typically result in pain, swelling, redness, or itching.
Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Pred Forte. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Pred Forte:
Before using, give the eye drops a good shake and wash your hands.
Pull down your lower eyelid to make a tiny pocket and tilt your head back a little. Squeeze a drop into this pocket while holding the dropper above the eye. For one or two minutes, close your eyes.
Don't use more drops than your doctor has prescribed.
Avoid putting the eye dropper directly on your eye or touching its tip. Your eye could become infected by a contaminated dropper, which could cause major visual issues.
When wearing soft contact lenses, avoid using them. Pred Forte contains a preservative (benzalkonium chloride) that can leave the lenses permanently discoloured. Before putting in your contact lenses, take the medication at least fifteen minutes beforehand.
The most common side effects of Pred Forte include:
- Burning or stinging sensation in the eye.
- Feeling like there is a foreign body in your eye.
- Blurred vision.
- Changes in taste.
- Increased pressure in your eye (intraocular pressure).
- Eye irritation or eye swelling.
- Eye pain.
Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Pred Forte. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:
- An allergic reaction can manifest as difficulty breathing or swallowing, facial, lip, mouth, or throat swelling, skin peeling, skin rash, or hives.
- Long-term use increases your risk of cataracts, glaucoma, certain eye infections, and thinning of the cornea.
These are not all of the possible side effects of Pred Forte. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.
Before starting Pred Forte, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including if you have:
- Glaucoma.
- Cataract surgery.
- A fungal, TB (tuberculosis), or viral infection (including herpes simplex) of the eye.
- Pred Forte is contraindicated in most ocular viral infections of the cornea and conjunctiva, including herpes simplex keratitis, vaccinia, and varicella, and also in fungal infections.
It usually takes one to two hours for Pred Forte to start working in the eye or eyes.
When Pred Forte is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions.
Pred Forte is available in the following dosage form and strength: 1% ophthalmic suspension.
The typical dose is one to two drops of Pred Forte applied to the afflicted eye or eyes two to four times a day. Before using, make sure to give the bottle a good shake.
Store Pred Forte at room temperature and keep out of reach of children.
Allergan Inc. is the company that manufactures Pred Forte.
There are several lower-cost generic versions of Pred Forte available.
If you have been taking the drug for more than a few weeks, don't stop or reduce the dosage on your own, even if you have adverse effects. Steroid withdrawal is a possibility, and it might cause serious symptoms. Tapering off Pred Forte is safer. Your dosage will be progressively reduced by your physician.
Pred Forte should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Talk to your doctor if you are already pregnant or if you have any plans to become pregnant. They will know or recommend what is best for you.
You should not breastfeed while on Pred Forte as this could pass through the breast milk and possibly harm your infant.
