Important information about Uceris

Uceris contains budesonide, a glucocorticoid corticosteroid. It works locally in the gastrointestinal tract to reduce inflammation linked to ulcerative colitis.

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Uceris. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Uceris:

  • Take one oral tablet once daily in the morning, with or without food. Swallow Uceris extended-release tablets whole with water. Do not chew, crush, or break them.
  • Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice during treatment because they can increase budesonide levels in your blood.
  • If you miss a dose, take it when you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take two doses at once.
  • This medication may weaken your immune system and make you more prone to infections. Take care to minimize exposure to sick people, especially those with chicken pox, measles, flu, or COVID-19 symptoms.
  • This medication may increase your blood sugar (hyperglycemia). If you are diabetic, your doctor may recommend testing your blood sugar more often.

Some mild or common side effects of Uceris seen in clinical trials include:

  • Headache.
  • Nausea.
  • Joint pain.
  • Constipation.
  • Weight gain.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Uceris. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

  • High cortisol (hypercorticism) - Symptoms may include acne, easy bruising, rounding of the face, ankle swelling, increased hair on the body or face, a fatty hump between the shoulders, or pink or purple stretch marks.
  • Adrenal insufficiency or adrenal gland suppression - Symptoms may include tiredness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, or low blood pressure.
  • Increased risk of infection - Symptoms may include fever, chills, cough, pain, tiredness, aches, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
  • Allergic reaction - Symptoms may include skin rash, itching, swelling, or trouble breathing.
  • Worsening allergies - Symptoms may include worsening eczema, rhinitis (runny nose), or other allergy symptoms.

These are not all of the possible side effects of Uceris. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.

Before starting Uceris, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including:

  • Liver problems.
  • An upcoming surgery.
  • Rhinitis or eczema.
  • Tuberculosis.
  • Exposure to varicella (chicken pox) or measles.
  • Before starting Uceris, your doctor will want to ensure you do not have a latent (inactive) infection such as hepatitis B, tuberculosis, amebiasis, or threadworm, as these can be reactivated by corticosteroids.
  • High blood sugar (hypertension).
  • Diabetes.
  • Osteoporosis.
  • Peptic ulcer disease (stomach ulcers).
  • Glaucoma or cataracts.
  • High blood pressure.

  • Do not take Uceris if you are allergic to budesonide or any of the ingredients in Uceris extended-release tablets. Anaphylactic reactions have occurred with other budesonide formulations.
  • Known or suspected Strongyloides (threadworm) infection.
  • Cerebral malaria.

Uceris is taken for up to 8 weeks to induce remission in mild to moderate ulcerative colitis.

When Uceris is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:

  • Ketoconazole, grapefruit juice, and other CYP3A4 inhibitors. These inhibitors can increase budesonide levels and may raise the risk of systemic corticosteroid side effects such as hypercorticism.
  • Other corticosteroids, including prednisone, may increase steroid-related adverse effects.

Uceris is available as 9 mg extended-release tablets.

It should be stored at room temperature, out of the reach of children and pets.

Uceris is distributed by Salix Pharmaceuticals, a division of Bausch Health.

Yes, it is available from many manufacturers of generic drugs.

Barring any of the above serious side effects, do not stop or change Uceris without medical advice. Stopping suddenly can put you at risk of severe withdrawal symptoms, as this medication needs to be tapered off slowly.

Based on data from animals, Uceris may cause fetal harm.

Talk to your doctor if you are already pregnant or if you have any plans to become pregnant. They will know or recommend what is best for you.

The safety of budesonide during lactation is not known.

Talk to your doctor if you are already breastfeeding or if you have any plans to breastfeed. They will know or recommend what is best for you.
