Anucort HC

• For Anucort HC cream, apply a thin layer of the cream topically to the rectal area. Do not insert the cream inside the rectum. It can be used one to four times a day. Follow the directions from your healthcare provider.
• For Anucort HC rectal suppositories, unwrap the suppository and moisten it with a few drops of water. Lie down and gently insert the suppository, pointed end first, into the rectum. Try to remain lying down so the medication has time to work properly. It’s typically used two to three times a day, but follow the directions from your healthcare provider.
• If your symptoms do not improve or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.
• If you miss a dose of Anucort HC, use it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue using it as directed.

Some mild or common side effects of Anucort HC seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:

• Skin reactions, like irritation, dryness, and changes in skin color around the rectal area
• Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Anucort HC. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:
• Allergic reaction. Signs and symptoms include a skin rash, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
• Reduced adrenal gland function, also known as adrenal insufficiency. Signs and symptoms include nausea, vomiting, lack of energy, and low blood pressure
• Hypertension (increased blood pressure)
• Infections. Signs and symptoms include fever, nausea, and vomiting
• Eye problems, like cataracts and glaucoma. Signs and symptoms include cloudy vision, changes in how you see colors, and changes in vision

Osteoporosis (weak bones)

Severe rectal pain, bleeding from the rectum, or worsening of your condition

• Current fungal infection, tuberculous, or viral lesions of the skin

It may take a week to notice improvement in pain when using Anucort HC for hemorrhoids.

When Anucort HC is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:

• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) include aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, celecoxib, diclofenac, and others
• Estrogen in birth control or hormonal replacement medications
• Certain heart medications, like digoxin
• Diabetic medications
• Antibiotics like clarithromycin or erythromycin
• Seizure medications like carbamazepine or phenytoin
• Warfarin (a blood thinner)

Anucort HC is available as 25 mg suppositories and 1% and 2.5% hydrocortisone cream.
